Swansea University is putting working 1980s computers into the hands of Welsh school students, families, refugees, jobseekers and older adults to tackle digital exclusion
The new Cynefin Digidol project, led by Dr Megan Venn-Wycherley and delivered by Technocamps in Welsh and English, draws on the university's History of Computing Collection from September to December 2026.
On 8 September, Swansea University launched a project called Cynefin Digidol that does something counterintuitive on its face: it puts 1980s computers into the hands of people across Wales who are most likely to be locked out of the modern digital world. The working machines come from the university’s own History of Computing Collection, and the premise is that getting hands-on with the period when home computing first became a household idea is a better on-ramp to digital confidence than a tablet handed over with no context. School students, families, refugees, jobseekers and older adults are all in the target audience, and the Swansea University press office announcement lays out what the project is for: tackling digital exclusion in communities where a modern smartphone or laptop is often more intimidating than it is empowering.
The name itself carries some of the argument. Cynefin is a Welsh word for a sense of place and belonging, and the project’s framing treats the 1980s machines less as obsolete hardware and more as a shared cultural reference point — something many Welsh adults will have encountered in a school classroom, a family living room, or a first job, and something younger learners can be introduced to without the accumulated anxiety of twenty-first-century operating systems. That older hardware, when grouped under the umbrella of vintage computing, is precisely the era when personal computers moved from research labs into ordinary homes, which is also the moment the basic ideas of booting a machine, saving a file, and writing a short program became things a curious person could pick up without a manual written by an engineer.
The project is led by Dr Megan Venn-Wycherley, and the sessions themselves are being delivered bilingually in Welsh and English by Technocamps, the university’s STEM outreach programme. The run is short and focused: September to December 2026, with the work taking place in schools, community venues and other neighbourhood settings across Wales rather than at the university itself. The Swansea University press release is clear that the point is not archival nostalgia; it is that a machine which only does a few things, and does them slowly, turns out to be a friendlier introduction to computing than one running a modern operating system with dozens of competing notifications.
Nation.Cymru’s coverage from 10 September picks up the same framing and adds the public-facing dimension of the programme: alongside the community sessions, the project will be showcased at the Festival of Social Science and at the Swansea Science Festival, where a family-friendly stand will let visitors try out the vintage machines, play the period games and work through the puzzles that came with them. That public presence matters for the project’s logic, because the people who benefit most from a low-pressure first encounter with a computer are often the ones who would never have signed up for a formal digital-skills class in the first place.
The wider point being made by both the university and the Welsh-language press is that digital exclusion in 2026 is not primarily a hardware problem. Most of the audiences Cynefin Digidol is targeting either have a smartphone already, or could be given one; what they often lack is the confidence that comes from understanding what a computer actually does when you press a key. A 1980s machine, with its boot sequence on a monitor, its BASIC prompt blinking on screen, and its narrow set of clearly bounded commands, makes that underlying logic visible in a way that a modern phone, designed to hide every step from the user, never does. Treating digital exclusion as a familiarity problem rather than an access problem is what makes the vintage-computing pitch a serious intervention rather than a curiosity.
There is also a specifically Welsh dimension that the project’s name is doing some quiet work to claim. By routing the initiative through Technocamps in both Welsh and English, and by framing the activity around a word that names a sense of place, the university is positioning the 1980s machines not as imported museum pieces but as part of a shared Welsh technological inheritance — the same Sinclair-era hardware that turned up in Welsh schools a generation ago, now being put back in front of the same communities in a different context. Whether that framing holds up over the four-month run remains to be seen, but as a way of turning a press release about old computers into something with cultural as well as pedagogical weight, it is a more interesting bet than the usual digital-inclusion announcement.
